Lionel Varion
With a PhD in Far Eastern Studies and a Master's degree in Chinese language and Culture and Political Science, Lionel Vairon has worked as a journalist and editor, served as French diplomat for over a dozen years in Southeast Asia and the Middle East, and also taught at schools including Université Paris Diderot-Paris 7.
As a sinologist, he taught at the Institut National des Langues et Civilisations Orientales (INALCO), the Institut des Hautes Etudes Commerciales (HEC) and was Head of Seminar on China Geopolitics at the Collège Interarmées de Défense (War College).
He also acted as Special Advisor for the President of the Republic of Niger between 2011 and 2012.
He is currently the CEO of CEC Consulting, a member of the global advisory council at Cornerstone Capital Group, and an emeritus member of the Tuniso-Chinese Cooperation Council.
His research focus includes strategic issues, geopolitics, intercultural communication, China issues, as well as issues concerning East Asia and the Middle East. He is the author of "China Threat?: The Challenges, Myths and Realities of China's Rise." He has also published many articles on international relations in professional journals.
